2048 Games

Wait, That’s It?

Every time we explain the object of 2048 to someone, they seem surprised by how simple and seemingly “boring” this Tetris-like game can be. Boy, are they wrong! Without question, 2048 is one of the most thrilling and addicting online puzzle games we have ever played. There’s a reason it did so well on the play store, after all, and why we’ve seen lots of new versions coming out lately. So, yes, the single object of the game is to achieve the number 2048, but it’s not exactly as easy as it seems. Let’s take a look at how it works, and then you can try it for yourself and see what we mean.

How to Play

The game is played using a 4 x 4 game board and a set of square pieces with even numbers on them. Your job is to slide two pieces with the same number together, combining them into a larger sum. For example, two 4s become an 8, two 8s become a 16, and so on and so forth. Each time you slide up, down, left, or right, all of the pieces on the gameboard move in that direction until they hit either another piece of the edge of the gameboard. In addition, every time you slide, a new piece is added. If the gameboard fills up with pieces, you lose. If you get one of the blocks to the number 2048, you win!

Tips for Success in 2048 Games

Now that you know how to play this 2048 game online, let’s talk a little bit about how you actually play well. First and foremost, you should know that, even if you don’t hit the number 2048, you still receive a high score. You can use this to gauge your progress before actually achieving the main goal of the game. If you scored 3500 last time and 5000 this time, even though you didn’t get the block to 2048 in either case, you’re still moving in the right direction. Speaking of moving in the right direction, that brings us to our first of three pro 2048 game tips.

Two Birds, One Stone

Before you decide which of the four directions you want to slide those pieces in, take a look and see how many tile matches you will create. If moving left and right means that you will create 2 matches, great, but make sure to check the other directions. Let’s say sliding up and down will allow for three matches. In that case, move up and down. The more matches you make, the more space you clear up on the 2048 game board. More space equals more freedom to match big numbers and prevent the board from filling up. This tip takes a bit of patience, but it’s well worth it if you want to win.

Barricade Big Numbers Only

Lots of 2048 high-score chasers will keep the tile with the highest number buried in a corner, and that’s okay, as long as you don’t do that with smaller numbers. If you have a 2 surrounded by some 64s, a 128, and a 256, then you’re going to have a really hard time getting that 2 out of there, so you’re basically wasting a space! Get those smaller numbers out into the open where they can easily be matched, and let the big numbers hang out with each other in the corner. If you combine this 2048 online tip with the above method, you’ve got a really good shot at beating the game! There’s just one thing left we need to tell you.

Think Two+ Moves Ahead

We already talked about planning your current move, and how you should always choose the option that allows for more matches, but there is a small exception to that. If you look two moves ahead, you’ll see what we mean. What if you make three matches with a single move, but you can see that you won’t have any matches for two moves after that? It’s better to make fewer matches with your first move if it means you get to consistently match pieces afterwards. Make sense? Don’t just think about the current move, but picture what’s going to happen after you make those matches. You have enough blocks to deal with as you slam these pieces into each other for hours upon hours, so let us deal with the game blockers. Whether you’re on a school computer or wherever else, just open these games up in your web browser and get right to playing, that’s it! No loading times, no hidden costs, just free and fun games that you can play anywhere.
